Roger Botembe
Roger Botembe, born on March 4, 1959 in Kinshasa and died on December 31, 2019, is a Congolese painter. He was educated at institutions that include The Beaux-Arts Academy in Kinshasa and Brussels, as well as the National Art Institute, Abidjan. He worked from his studio in Kinshasa and also spent his time teaching. In 1992, he founded the Ateliers Botembe, a Congolese school of contemporary African art. He was associate professor and head of the Arts-Plastiques section at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Kinshasa and director of International Cooperation and Promotion at the Institute of National Museums of Congo since 2006. In 1999 he founded the movement Trans-symbolism, current of the Renaissance of contemporary African art. Botembe received a number of awards, including the prize for excellence in art, awarded to him by the City of Brussels. His artistic output comprises oil painting in an abstract style reminiscent of African masks.
