Spirit Matter

Jonathan Freemantle

In the Spirit Matter series, Jonathan employs a reverse painting technique. The canvas is initially dyed with a deep black or indigo. Subsequently, the artist bleaches sections of the surface to reveal lighter areas. This process unfolds slowly and in multiple layers, aiming to imbue the artwork with an ethereal light.

The outcome is intended to be open and suggestive of a numinous experience. Rather than depicting Spirit directly, which would be impossible since the Spirit is invisible, the paintings serve as an evocation, an echo, a vapor. They suggest a presence that one might catch fleetingly out of the corner of the eye, just before it disappears.
