Phoka Nyokong

Phoka Nyokong is a South African visual artist whose work explores identity, culture, and socio-political themes. For his innovative approach and cultural critique, he was awarded the prestigious Absa L'Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award in 2023, gaining him both local and international recognition.

Nyokong's artistic journey began in 2007 as a writer, initially working on a collection of poems before venturing into short stories and plays for theatre. His transition into visual arts came in 2011 when he began painting full-time as an artist. Following his first exhibition in 2013, Nyokong expanded his focus to include both sculpture and painting.

In 2015, he was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to pursue formal studies in art, including training in printmaking and ceramics. His work has since been exhibited in notable galleries and festivals.
