JONATHAN FREEMANTLE - THE FALLEN TREE
4 MAY - 6 JUNE 2024
Gallery MOMO presents ‘The Fallen Tree’, Jonathan Freemantle’s fifth solo exhibition curated by Odysseus Shirindza. The exhibition collects a body of work made by Freemantle during a 7-month residency with the The Hugo Burge Foundation in Scotland, where he occupied the former studio and cottage of renowned artist and musician, the late Rory McEwen. Freemantle’s work will be presented in conversation with a selection of works by Jackson Hlungwani.
During the intensive residency, Freemantle was able to dive deeper into an already existing relationship with nature. The paintings harnessed their colours from the late autumnal blaze as he began the residency in 2023, each day introducing a new colour into his palette.

INGOMA YOMHLABA
26 NOV 2022 - 21 JAN 2023
This series, “Ingoma Yomhlaba,” is inspired by ukuthwasa and aims to indicate the healing process that must take place as a result of historical colonial trauma ingrained on black people. Colonialism has left deep scars in our minds and bodies particularly black individuals. My art reflects
on old traditions as a way to find healing from this pain in today’s South Africa.
